Last month, Ameriflight announced that it had signed a letter of intent to purchase 35 VTOL air cargo drones from Sabrewing Aircraft Company. Building on a long-standing relationship between Ameriflight, the largest Part 135 cargo airline in the US, and Sabrewing, a leader in uncrewed aircraft design and manufacturing, the deal will deliver Rhaegal-A drones to Ameriflight following type certification of the aircraft.

Ameriflight adds 35 heavy-duty cargo drones to wish list

Three weeks after signing a tentative agreement for pilotless cargo planes made by startup Natilus, Ameriflight, a large regional cargo airline operating small aircraft for customers such as FedEx, UPS and DHL, formally expressed interest in purchasing 35 vertical takeoff and landing cargo drones from Sabrewing Aircraft Co. Ameriflight last week said it expects to take delivery of Sabrewing’s Rhaegal-A heavy cargo drone following Federal Aviation Administration certification of the aircraft, which will be used to pursue new business opportunities in middle-mile replenishment of e-commerce distribution centers.

Leading US Part 135 cargo airline Ameriflight is moving to diversify the business it operates for clients like UPS by supplementing its fleet of traditional aircraft with next-generation heavy-lift drones – most recently the brawny UAVs from Oxnard-based startup Sabrewing.

Ameriflight announced it has signed a letter of intent to buy 35 of Sabrewing’s Rhaegal-A heavy-lift cargo drones, which are also being developed under the name “Alpha.”

Based out of Oxnard, California, Sabrewing Aircraft Company is a startup seeking to develop and certify a family of autonomous, hybrid-electric cargo drones. Dubbed the Rhaegal, the heavy-lift UAV would be capable of both conventional and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), with two variants–the smaller Rheagal-A and larger Rhaegal-B. Ed De Reyes, Sabrewing’s chairman and CEO, recently spoke to the AAM Report about the company’s testing and certification campaign. A partial transcript follows.

ADMC orders 52 Sabrewing Aircraft air cargo drones – Aerospace Manufacturing and Design

The Arabian Development and Marketing Corp. (ADMC) has ordered 52 Sabrewing Aircraft Co. Inc. heavy-lift cargo uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). This marks the third contract with Arabian Development & Marketing Co. brings total orders to more than million. The purchase follows the Sabrewing Rhaegal-A (Alpha) aircraft’s September flight with 829 lb. (374kg) of payload – the most yet for a commercial cargo UAV.
